Passengers are advised that to avoid delays to their journey, they should:

  • Never carry anything into the UK for somebody else.
  • Never bring goods which are prohibited into the UK. If in doubt, ask at the Customs enquiry point.
  • If passengers are unsure about duty/tax free entitlement, they are advised to go to the Customs enquiry point.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs operates a system of pre-authorisation for all pets including assistance animals imported in to Northern Ireland (NI).

It is a legal requirement for Northern Ireland that all pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) and assistance dogs who travel directly into Northern Ireland    must do so under the conditions of an Import Authorisation (ie a licence) issued by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

This licence must be applied for and obtained in advance of travel to Northern Ireland. Additionally, airlines must give a minimum of 48 hours advance notification to DAERA Portal Branch of any animals to be carried (aldergrove.portal@daera-ni.gov.uk).

On arrival if the pet owner does not have the correct documents or their pet hasn’t been properly prepared it will be licensed into quarantine until it fully meets the entry requirements or sent back to the country it travelled from. The pet owner must pay the costs for this.

For further guidance please see attached link to DAERA website on Travelling with Pets: https://www.daera-ni.gov.uk/articles/travelling-pets.
